Moon Milk Recipe: The warm evening ritual with cocoa, cinnamon & chamomile
Posted on July 03 2026,
Moon Milk is the serene counterpart to Golden Milk: a warm, spicy evening drink rooted in Ayurvedic tradition and now celebrated worldwide as a bedtime ritual. The base: warm (plant-based) milk, complemented by soothing herbs and warming spices.
What is Moon Milk?
The name comes from the timing: Moon Milk is drunk in the evening when the moon rises. Traditionally, warm milk is combined with spices like cinnamon, cardamom, and nutmeg, and herbs such as ashwagandha. The result is a well-rounded, mildly spicy ritual drink – perfect for consciously ending the day.
The Basic Recipe: Moon Milk with Cacao
Ingredients for 1 cup:
- 250–300 ml oat or almond milk
- 1–2 tsp Cacao Ruhe Organic Cacao Blend (with cacao, Ceylon cinnamon, ashwagandha, lemon balm & cardamom)
- Optional: a little honey or maple syrup
Preparation: Gently warm the milk (do not boil), stir in the blend, froth – done. You can find the detailed recipe with pictures here: Moon Milk Cacao.
Cacao-Free Version: Chamomile Moon Milk
For those who prefer it very mild in the evening, replace the cacao with a strong chamomile infusion: Steep 1 tbsp Organic Chamomile Flowers with 100 ml hot water, let steep for 5–7 minutes, strain, and mix with 200 ml frothed warm plant-based milk. A pinch of Ceylon Cinnamon completes the drink.
Moon Milk vs. Golden Milk – What's the Difference?
Both are warm milk drinks with Ayurvedic roots. Golden Milk, with turmeric and ginger, is bright, spicy, and traditionally for the morning. Moon Milk is darker, more rounded – with cacao, cinnamon, and soothing herbs – and is for the evening. Many integrate both as a fixed duo into their day: Golden Milk to start, Moon Milk to finish.
